Avant la naissance de Sunny Billy Jones, ses parents vivaient à la Nouvelle-Orléans dans le rude quartier de Storyville. Storyville était le lieu de prédilection du Jazz de l'époque où l'on trouvait des personnalités comme Louis Armstrong ou Jelly Roll Morton. A la fin des années 1920, les parents de Sunny décident de quitter la Louisiane pour commencer une nouvelle vie à Chicago.
